You know the old saying, if a blogger creates a piece of content and there’s no one around to read it, does it even exist? Or something like that…
Jokes aside, there’s nothing more frustrating than pouring hours into your blog, day in and day out, only to achieve minimal results. But what if there was a way to get your content in front of hundreds – or even thousands – more people who are looking for the exact topics that you’re writing about? And what if I told you that it didn’t require any more time or effort on your part?
It might sound like a dream, but this is the reality for bloggers who have mastered the art of writing for SEO. And I’m here to help you do the same.
As an SEO Expert, I know a thing or two about creating Google ranking-worthy content, and today I want to share my top tips to help you boost your blog traffic the easy way.
Whether you’re a seasoned blogger or just starting out, these tips will help you take your blog to the next level. Let’s dive in!
SEO (which stands for Search Engine Optimization) is the process of optimizing your website content to rank higher in search engines like Google. The higher your content ranks, the more likely people are to click through to your website, resulting in more FREE traffic to your blog: the holy grail for bloggers everywhere.
In essence, SEO is about providing relevant and helpful content to answer someone’s search in Google. Because each time someone types a keyword into the search bar, it’s Google’s job to find the most relevant, useful and high-quality content to display in search results.
And the search engine algorithms don’t care if that piece of content was posted today, last week or 3 years ago. If it’s still relevant and it provides a bunch of value for your audience, you can continue to get more eyeballs on your blog each and every month (and the numbers actually snowball over time). All the work is done up front.
Find out what people want to know, write your blog to provide the exact content someone is looking for and just sit back and wait for the traffic to roll in. Yes it can be that easy. You just need to create content that Google and your audience will love.
So, what does that look like? Let’s take a look.
Great SEO content is useful and adds value to your audience. Start by thinking about how the content will benefit your audience. Avoid creating content for the sake of targeting keywords. Instead use your keyword research as an insight into your audience’s needs, desires and pain points.
You want to make sure your content is optimised with keywords. To create high-value content, you should aim to cover broader topics on each web page.
For example, a 2,000-word guide that might include 10-15 (closely related) keywords is going to be more valuable than a 200-word blog post targeting one specific keyword. The in-depth guide is going to rank higher on Google. Just make sure your web page is about a single topic and not a collection of unrelated info.
Search intent is the why behind a keyword. Why is this person searching? What info are they looking for? Understanding the answer to these questions will help you create the most relevant content to stand out in search results.
Considering a searcher’s intent helps you better serve your audience with the right type of content (service page, FAQ, or blog article), with the right angle (pricing, benefits, comparison), and in the right format (step-by-step guide, comparison table, Q & A), and help you craft a blog post that is both highly relevant and useful.
While it’s OK to take inspiration from competitors or other websites and blogs, make sure you add your own spin on it. If you want your content to be the best result on Google, you’ll need to provide content that’s more relevant or useful than others, or provides a unique point of view.
It’s great to jump on trending topics, but the majority of your SEO content should be evergreen. The beauty of SEO is that one great piece of content can continue to rank for months or even years to come, so make sure your content stands the test of time. If you’re creating up-to-date guides (e.g. top interior design trends for 2023), make sure you refresh these each year.
Google’s algorithm rewards websites that provide helpful content for users, by displaying them higher in search results. On the other hand, websites that provide low quality or low value content, will rank lower in search results.
It’s all about creating content that your audience will find valuable and interesting, rather than just creating content for the purpose of ranking in search results. To check whether your content ticks all the boxes, you can check out Google’s helpful content guidelines.
While it’s important that you don’t stuff your content with keywords, there is a way to strategically use keywords to increase your content’s relevance. This can help you rank higher in Google’s search results when someone searches for those keywords.
Put simply? Google uses your keywords to decide if your content should be shown to someone searching for it in Google. So, you’ll want to include them exactly where Google is looking for them, including in your page title, blog heading, URL and image alt text.
My final SEO tip
Consistency is key. When it comes to SEO, don’t expect any overnight results, but if you stay consistent with your content and follow the tips I’ve shared above, you will see results.
If you’re implementing SEO for the first time, it can take up to 4-6 months to see significant results. It will be worth the wait as you see your website traffic increase exponentially – and you can sit back and watch those blog views skyrocket!
